Welcome to the Fossil Fuel Data Assimilation System (FFDAS) data retrieval and visualization website. FFDAS is a data product that estimates CO2 emissions from the combustion of fossil fuel for the years 1997 to 2011 on a global, 0.1° × 0.1°, hourly grid. This data product is the result of a collaboration between Arizona State University (Drs. Kevin Robert Gurney & Salvi Asefi-Najafabady), the University of Melbourne (Dr. Peter Rayner) and Purdue University (Dr. Bedrich Benes). We are currently providing retrieval and visualization of FFDAS version 2.0.
Visualization and Data download
On this website, you can access the FFDAS v2.0 results via download of the complete dataset (0.1 degrees/hourly) or user-defined space/time subsets and aggregations. You can also retrieve uncertainties and specific sectoral layers that compose the complete FFDAS v2.0 result. Finally, you can generate quick plots of FFDAS results via our interactive plotting routine (and download this information).

How we generate FFDAS results
The methodology used to generate FFDAS can be found in Rayner et al. (2010) and Asefi-Najafabady et al. (2014). In short, the FFDAS estimates fossil fuel CO2 emissions by constraining elements of the Kaya identity at the gridcell level with national statistics on fossil fuel CO2 emissions, remotely sensed nighttime lights, population data, and information on the world’s power plants. As an assimilation system, FFDAS generates both an estimate of emissions at the gridcell level and an accompanying uncertainty estimate.
